Rio Ave is utilizing an unexpected three-week competitive hiatus to implement tactical changes and cultivate a stronger team identity, coach Sotiris Silaidopoulos indicated ahead of their return to play.
Silaidopoulos confirmed the extended break allowed the team to “work on new things” and “improve things,” expressing satisfaction with the squad’s work ethic.
The coach hinted at introducing “new information to use in the future” and experimenting with “different formations” in upcoming matches.
This strategic pause follows Rio Ave’s elimination from the Portuguese Cup, which extended their off-period, creating a 22-day gap between competitive fixtures.
Their first match back will be a “difficult” challenge against Santa Clara, a club that previously competed in the Conference League.
Silaidopoulos acknowledged that a long break can affect team rhythm, noting he would have preferred to play Santa Clara immediately after their last match. However, he emphasized the team’s preparation and focus for the upcoming game.
He praised Santa Clara as a “mature team” with “a lot of quality upfront” and a strong understanding of game dynamics.
Addressing fan concerns about the team’s current record of three defeats, six draws, and two victories, Silaidopoulos asserted that “everyone wants to win.”
He stressed the need for “time” and “stability” to build the desired team culture and create new momentum.
Silaidopoulos also defended past results, citing adversities such as playing with 10 men for 70 minutes against Estoril and deserving victories in other drawn matches. He affirmed the team’s ambition and commitment to improving.
