Sumatra Floods and Landslides Kill 84: Dozens Still Missing in Indonesia

Tropical storms have unleashed deadly floods and landslides across parts of Southeast Asia, killing more than 200 people in recent days and underscoring the region’s acute vulnerability to extreme weather events amplified by climate change.

Indonesia has been particularly hard hit, with at least 84 fatalities and dozens more still missing following severe flooding and landslides across Sumatra island this week. Rescue officials continue to search for survivors.

North Sumatra province reported over 30 deaths, with Sibolga city among the worst-affected areas. Access and communication remain cut off in many locations, hindering aid efforts.

Authorities hope for improved weather conditions to allow helicopters to reach isolated, hard-hit communities.

In West Sumatra province, the local disaster agency confirmed at least 22 deaths and 12 individuals still missing.

Heavy rains also triggered floods and landslides in Aceh province, leading to the evacuation of nearly 1,500 people. Power outages have affected parts of Aceh as well.

Beyond Indonesia, neighboring countries have also faced severe consequences from the intense weather. Southern Thailand has experienced extensive flooding, resulting in more than 100 deaths and leaving many residents trapped in their homes.

Malaysia has also reported significant flooding and at least two fatalities.

The region typically experiences a monsoon season from June to September, bringing heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides. However, recent tropical storms have intensified this year’s seasonal weather patterns.

Scientists warn that climate change is altering storm patterns, along with the duration and intensity of rainy seasons. This leads to more extreme rainfall, rapid flooding, and stronger winds.

Earlier in November, heavy rains caused landslides in Central Java, Indonesia, killing at least 38 people and leaving approximately 13 missing in a separate incident.
