Portugal’s Historic Quarterfinal Run Ends at Japan Street Skate World Cup

Portuguese skaters made history by placing a record four athletes in the quarterfinals of the Street Skateboarding World Cup in Kitakyushu, Japan, on Friday, though none advanced further in the competition.

Gabriel Ribeiro achieved the highest ranking among the Portuguese contingent, finishing 22nd with 43.17 points. His performance was not enough to secure a spot in the semifinals.

Olympic skater Gustavo Ribeiro, who had secured a direct entry to the quarterfinals based on his eighth-place world ranking, placed 32nd with 30.89 points. The semifinals required a top-16 finish.

Pascal Teixeira concluded his run in 35th place with 25.63 points. In the women’s event, Matilde Ribeiro finished 40th.

The quarterfinal round was led by Japan’s Shirai Sora, who scored 67.61 points. Argentina’s Mauro Iglésias followed with 65.84 points, and Jaque Ilardi of the United States placed third with 64.82 points.

Two other Portuguese athletes competed in the initial qualification rounds but did not reach the quarterfinals. Madu Teixeira placed 55th, and Marina Simão finished 44th.
