Spanish 12-Year-Old Footballer Tells Female Team to ‘Clean Up’ After Rout

A sexist social media post by a 12-year-old male footballer against an opposing girls’ team in Spain has reignited debate over gender equality and respect in youth sports.

The incident occurred after a match where El Velarde CF defeated CD Monte Soccer Féminas 8-0. A player from the winning boys’ team posted an Instagram story instructing the girls’ team to “clean up.”

The Spanish Association for Parity and Equality in Sport quickly condemned the comment, highlighting its derogatory nature. The association stated that the boys not only disrespected their opponents but “insulted, humiliated, and belittled them.”

The association questioned who was responsible for such comments. They asked if the blame lay with “The club? The families? The teachers? The cultural heritage? Society in general?”

El Velarde CF acknowledged the incident, stating they had contacted the player’s family. They confirmed the “inappropriate comment” was removed and the minor “understood the situation.”

The club emphasized its commitment to values of respect and equality. It stated it would continue to educate all players.

In Spain, it is common for girls’ teams up to age 14 to compete against boys’ teams as part of their training.

The club stated it would not publicly expose the minor involved. It also indicated it would not make further statements on the matter.
