Portuguese PM: U-17 World Cup Champions Show ‘Portugal’s Future is Great’

Portuguese political leaders celebrated the national under-17 football team’s historic first World Cup title, praising the young squad as a symbol of the nation’s promising future.

On social media platform X, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro congratulated the team. He described the players as “brave young Lusitanians.” He said they demonstrated how Portugal’s future, including in football, “has everything to be great.” Montenegro specifically lauded their “talent, ambition, effort, grit and success.”

Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Margarida Balseiro Lopes also commended the squad. She emphasized the “team spirit that makes the whole country proud.” Lopes called the victory “a historic achievement.”

Portugal secured the U17 World Cup title by defeating Austria 1-0 in the final. Anísio Cabral scored the winning goal.

The match took place in Doha, Qatar. This global title adds to the U17 European Championship already held by the Portuguese team.
