Thailand Taps SpaceX Starlink for Flood Emergency Communications

Thailand is rushing to deploy SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service to re-establish critical communication links in southern regions hit hard by severe flooding.

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DE) announced Wednesday that it has coordinated with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to utilize Starlink equipment. This initiative aims to address widespread telecommunications outages in areas such as Hat Yai district in Songkhla province.

These outages have crippled ground communication systems for approximately a week, severely impeding the efforts of rescue agencies and officials. The government is focused on facilitating aid and evacuation operations for affected residents.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul recently approved an emergency declaration for Songkhla province. General Ukrist Bootanan, the Supreme Commander, has been appointed to lead the Forward Flood Emergency Operations Center for the crisis.

SpaceX has agreed to provide Starlink for emergency use, following discussions with Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC). The NBTC will issue import licenses, with strict conditions limiting usage to the officially declared emergency zones.

Minister Chaiyanok Chidchob emphasized the government’s concern for residents in Hat Yai. He stated that the Prime Minister has ordered the DE Ministry to urgently restore communication systems.

The minister thanked both SpaceX and NBTC for their cooperation in installing the satellite internet system under the authority of the Emergency Decree B.E. 2548. The Forward Flood Emergency Operations Center will determine the specific installation points for the Starlink terminals.

As of Thursday, floodwaters have receded in some parts of the province, allowing small vehicles to pass. However, many areas remain deeply submerged, with residents still in urgent need of food, supplies, and reliable communication access.
