Boavista Faces Closure Threat Amid Management Blame Game

Portugal’s historic Boavista Football Club is embroiled in a bitter public dispute between its management and its professional operating company, Boavista SAD, as the club faces a court request for its closure due to insolvency.

Boavista SAD issued a strong statement on Tuesday, accusing the parent club’s board of “successive attacks.” The SAD asserted it was being made a “scapegoat” for the team’s financial woes.

This public clash follows news that a judicial administrator has asked a commercial court in Gaia, Portugal, to shut down the institution due to insolvency.

The club’s board, led by Garrido Pereira, has blamed SAD for Boavista’s financial difficulties. They specifically cited the non-compliance of the SAD, under former owner Gerard Lopez, with a crucial protocol between the entities.

Boavista SAD countered these accusations in its statement. It claimed the board is creating a “narrative” to assign “responsibility for practically all problems faced” by the club to the SAD.

The SAD argued this posture has made it “an easy target and an alibi for all difficulties.” It contended the board seeks to divert attention from its “own decisions, omissions, and fragilities.”

The SAD further stated that the current board had promised “broad and immediate solutions” for challenges before elections ten months ago. These solutions, the SAD noted, have not materialized.

Instead, the SAD said it has faced “constant attacks” without any “self-criticism” from the board regarding its failure to deliver promised results.

Boavista SAD reiterated its commitment to finding solutions for the club’s future. It pledged to continue working daily with “rigor, responsibility, and strategic vision.”

The SAD also expressed confidence that “most Boavista supporters are not manipulated by these constant curtains of disinformation.” It reaffirmed its commitment to stability, refusing to participate in blame-shifting and focusing on protecting the institution.
