Austria has made history by reaching the U-17 World Cup final for the first time, defeating favored Italy 2-0 in a semi-final clash in Doha.
Forward Johannes Moser scored both goals for Austria, securing his position as the tournament’s leading scorer with eight goals. His decisive strikes came in the 57th and 90+3 minutes of the match.
Italy’s chances were further diminished when defender Benit Borasio received a red card in the 90+2 minute. Borasio had only been on the field for 10 minutes after being substituted in by coach Massimiliano Favo.
This marks Austria’s first appearance in a U-17 World Cup final in their third participation in the competition.
Austria will face the winner of the second semi-final between Portugal and Brazil, which is scheduled for later today.
The championship match will take place on Thursday at Khalifa International Stadium, kicking off at 7:00 p.m. local time in Doha.
Italy will play the loser of the Portugal-Brazil game for third place. That match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. local time in Doha at the Aspire Zone sports complex.
The tournament’s earlier matches have largely been held at the Aspire Zone sports complex. The final at Khalifa International Stadium will be a change of venue for the title decider.
