Reggae Legend Jimmy Cliff Dies at 81

Jimmy Cliff, the pioneering Jamaican singer and actor who helped introduce reggae music to a global audience, has died at 81 from pneumonia.

His family announced his passing on Monday via social media.

“To all the fans around the world, please know that your support was his strength throughout his career. He truly appreciated every fan for their love,” a message posted on Cliff’s official Instagram account stated. The family’s announcement did not specify the date of his death.

Cliff was a fundamental figure in bringing reggae to international audiences.

This was largely due to his starring role in the landmark 1972 film “The Harder They Come,” directed by Perry Henzell, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica.

He also authored numerous hits, including “You Can Get It If You Really Want” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People.”

His contributions were instrumental in popularizing the genre far beyond Jamaica.
