Porto Coach Paulo Freitas: “We Made Ourselves Vulnerable” After Derby Loss

Defending national champions FC Porto are facing an unexpected domestic crisis, with coach Paulo Freitas delivering a scathing assessment of his team’s performance and demanding immediate, fundamental changes after a recent heavy defeat.

Freitas spoke out following Porto’s 5-2 loss to rivals Sporting in a crucial league match. This defeat is the team’s third in the league this season.

The current two-time national champions have endured a disappointing start, failing to reach the Elite Cup final and losing the Super Cup, both to Sporting. These results could see them drop to seventh place in the league standings after seven rounds.

The coach stated players must “leave comfort zones that must definitely be eliminated.” He urged for introspection and a more decisive contribution from each individual.

Freitas did not dispute Sporting’s victory, saying it “is not debatable.” He highlighted numerous shortcomings, including a lack of aggression, intensity, and speed compared to their opponent.

“At times, as they say in the jargon, we set ourselves up,” Freitas commented, adding that the team must adapt to changes in the sport. “Having quality alone is not enough.”

He explained that Porto needs to “create much stronger dynamics of working for each other.” Failure to do so prevented them from unsettling Sporting.

Freitas, who joined the club this season, noted that the team only “woke up” in the second half, a pattern observed in an earlier loss against current league leaders Benfica.

He cited tactical errors, including exposing themselves excessively and failing to provide necessary cover, particularly leading to Sporting’s fourth goal.

“Hockey is like this, we have to understand that everyone has to attack and defend,” Freitas said. He criticized a lack of mobility with and without the ball, and players watching rather than actively participating in recoveries.

Freitas emphasized the need for players to “enter those spaces, wear down the opposing team, and come out with confidence.” He concluded by calling for reflection and hard work to deliver different answers, underscoring the team’s responsibility to its institution, city, and region.
