Lanús secured their second Copa Sudamericana title, defeating Brazilian side Atlético Mineiro in a dramatic penalty shootout decided by their goalkeeper’s crucial saves.
The Argentine club triumphed 5-4 in the shootout after a goalless draw persisted through regular time and extra time.
Goalkeeper Losada emerged as the hero of the match, stopping three of Atlético Mineiro’s penalty attempts.
His decisive saves included efforts from Biel, on loan from Sporting, and former FC Porto star Hulk, a prominent player for the Brazilian team.
The final was held in Asunción, the capital of Paraguay, where neither team managed to break the deadlock over 120 minutes of play.
Biel had a significant scoring opportunity after entering the game in the 94th minute, but could not convert.
This marks Lanús’s second triumph in the competition, following their first victory in 2013 against another Brazilian club, Ponte Preta.
Atlético Mineiro, meanwhile, was left with only their 2013 Copa Libertadores title as a major international trophy.
Lanús now joins an elite group of clubs that have won the Copa Sudamericana multiple times, alongside teams like Liga de Quito, Boca Juniors, and Independiente.
The competition has been contested for 24 editions, but no club has ever achieved a third title.
The winning Lanús squad includes Eduardo Salvio, who previously played for Benfica.
