ChatGPT Debuts Global Group Chat: Collaborate with AI, Up to 20 Users

OpenAI has rolled out a new group chat feature globally, significantly expanding ChatGPT’s utility from a personal assistant to a collaborative platform for multiple users.

The feature allows up to 20 individuals to interact with each other and the artificial intelligence simultaneously. OpenAI stated the update transforms ChatGPT into a space for friends, family, or colleagues to plan, create, and make decisions together.

Within these group conversations, ChatGPT is designed to assist by searching for information, summarizing discussions, and comparing various options presented by participants.

Practical applications include coordinating travel plans, cooperatively drafting documents, helping to resolve disagreements, or conducting joint research projects.

The group chat feature became available last Thursday to all ChatGPT users, including those on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro subscription plans.

Users can initiate a group chat by adding participants directly or by sharing an invitation link. New participants are prompted to set up a brief profile that includes a name, username, and picture.

Adding new members to an ongoing conversation creates a new chat, ensuring the original discussion remains unaltered. Individual privacy settings and the “Memory” feature remain unique to each user within the group environment.

OpenAI clarified that ChatGPT is programmed to discern when to actively contribute to a conversation and when to remain silent. Users can explicitly tag “@ChatGPT” to solicit a direct response from the AI.

The AI can also respond to messages using emojis and reference the profile pictures of participants in its interactions.
