Google is deploying its advanced artificial intelligence assistant, Gemini, into Android Auto, aiming to revolutionize the in-car user experience with more natural, conversational interactions for drivers globally.
The integration represents a significant upgrade, progressively replacing the existing Google Assistant with enhanced capabilities for hands-free use. This shift introduces a more natural and fluid conversational experience, crucial for maintaining driver focus and safety on the road.
A key feature is Gemini Live, which allows users to ask follow-up questions and even interrupt the assistant, mimicking human conversation more closely. This functionality is central to Google’s stated goal to “make time on the road as valuable as possible without compromising safety.”
The new assistant is designed to handle more complex tasks and integrate information across various applications. Drivers can, for example, access information hidden in emails, obtain quick answers about nearby businesses, restaurants, or attractions, and easily edit, translate, or send messages. It also allows for the instant creation of personalized music playlists.

The rollout of Gemini is being conducted gradually, implemented server-side. Initially, it is accessible to users running beta versions of Android Auto, specifically versions 15.6 or 15.7.
While no official global availability announcement has been made, the feature has already been reported by users in countries including Germany, Italy, and Spain. To access Gemini, users must have the Gemini application installed on their Android smartphone.
After the update, an introductory screen for Gemini is expected to appear on the car’s display when a user attempts to activate the Google Assistant. Some early adopters have reported minor issues, such as problems with contact nicknames, but the overall enhancement delivered by the AI update is considered substantial.
