Malaysia Suspends Two Mines After River Turns Blue, Radioactive Waste Found

Malaysia has suspended two mining operations and launched an investigation into potential radioactive contamination after the Perak River mysteriously turned blue.

The cabinet approved a three-week suspension for MCRE Resources, a rare earth mining company, and Rahman Hydraulic Tin, the nation’s largest open-pit tin mine. Both are located in the upper Perak River area, with Rahman Hydraulic Tin situated in Klian Intan.

Dato’ Sri Johari bin Abdul Ghani, who holds portfolios for both Plantation and Commodities and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, announced the measure in Parliament on November 19.

Initial findings from MCRE Resources indicate wastewater samples from its site showed a blueish tone consistent with the river’s unusual color.

Investigators also found waste samples from the company’s mineral leaching process registered 13 Becquerels of radioactivity. This level exceeds the permitted environmental impact assessment limit by one Becquerel.

Minister Johari stated the investigation would now concentrate on the specific chemicals used in the leaching process. Officials will verify if these chemicals align with information previously reported by the company.

The peculiar blue color in the Perak River was first observed on October 21 near the Kampung Sungai Papan bridge, approximately five kilometers from Kampung Air Ganda.

Mohammad Ezanee Mat Salleh, director of the Perak State Environment Department, linked the incident to mining activities. A comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the river’s discoloration.

Malaysia possesses estimated rare earth reserves of about 16.1 million tons. However, the country currently lacks the technology for large-scale extraction and processing.

The Malaysian government is reportedly in discussions with China regarding rare earth processing capabilities.
