HMD Global has unveiled the Terra M, a rugged smart feature phone specifically engineered for secure, critical communications among military personnel, emergency services, and large enterprises operating in challenging environments.
The device is designed for professionals in critical infrastructure, law enforcement, and government, offering robust durability and specialized features for extreme conditions.
Its construction meets military-grade MIL-STD-810H standards, making it resilient against severe temperatures, humidity, sand, and high vibrations.
The Terra M also features IP68 certification for complete dust protection and water immersion up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) for 30 minutes in fresh water. An IP69K rating further ensures protection against high-pressure water jets reaching 80 degrees Celsius (176 degrees Fahrenheit) and resistance to drops from height.
HMD Secure’s Mobile Device Management (MDM) system is integrated, providing secure data handling and pre-installed enterprise applications such as Mozilla Firefox, SOTI: MobiControl, Zello, Threema, OsmAnd, and Lyfo. This aims to facilitate smooth operations and rapid communication.
Key physical features include a 2.8-inch high-durability touchscreen that supports glove use, alongside a configurable Push-to-Talk (PTT) button for seamless group communication. An emergency button can also be programmed for quick alerts in critical situations.
The device operates on a custom HMD operating system, promising quarterly security patch updates for five years. It also boasts a high-quality speaker to ensure clear audio in noisy environments.
Internally, the Terra M is powered by a Qualcomm Dragonwing QCM229 chipset, built on an 11-nanometer process. It features a quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 CPU running at up to 2.0 GHz and a Qualcomm Adreno 702 GPU.
Connectivity options include 4G LTE with VoLTE and VoWi-Fi capabilities, e-SIM support, Wi-Fi 5, and Bluetooth 5. The device comes with a substantial 2,510 mAh battery, capable of providing up to 10 days of standby time.
Optional accessories, such as a belt clip and a charging dock, are available to enhance its utility in various professional settings.
HMD is expected to launch the Terra M in the first quarter of 2026, with pricing details to be announced closer to the release date. The device marks a significant expansion of HMD Secure’s business into the enterprise, government, and defense sectors.
