Portuguese club Gil Vicente is strategically utilizing the current international break and a forthcoming friendly match to evaluate and integrate promising youth academy talents and less-used senior players into its first-team squad.
The club is scheduled to play Moreirense next Friday in a friendly encounter that will take place behind closed doors, with the specific venue yet to be announced.
Coach César Peixoto views this as an opportunity to provide crucial game rhythm to athletes who have seen less playing time and, specifically, to promising “pearls” emerging from the club’s academy.
This initiative aligns with Gil Vicente’s primary objective for the current season, which is to create opportunities for young players to ascend to the main team.
Peixoto has already demonstrated this commitment by debuting Gonçalo Maia, Diogo Costa, and Rodrigo Rodrigues in the 1st League this season.
The coach has recently observed academy talents such as Gonçalo Paiva, Kaba, and Bassco Soyer, with Soyer having notably scored a goal against Oliveirense.
French central defender Arthur Tchaptchet, who netted twice in a friendly against Penafiel, frequently trains with the senior squad and holds the position of fourth-choice central defender in the team’s hierarchy.
Moreirense, a fellow 1st League team, will serve as a significant test for these young prospects.
The match will also allow other senior players to gain minutes, including internationals André Picornell, Jonathan Buatu, Gustavo Varela, and Konan, who are expected to return for the friendly.
The extended international break, prolonged by a pause for the Portugal Cup, provides an ideal window for these evaluations, both in training and through competitive match experience.
Both Gil Vicente and Moreirense have been eliminated from the Portugal Cup, making them suitable opponents to utilize this period for squad development.
