Cloudflare Outage Paralyzes Key Global Web Services, Crypto Platforms

A widespread outage at Cloudflare disrupted significant portions of the internet on Tuesday, particularly crippling numerous cryptocurrency platforms and renewing concerns about the digital economy’s reliance on centralized infrastructure.

The disruption, which began around 11:48 UTC, caused internal server errors across many websites globally. Critical crypto services like Coinbase, Kraken, DeFiLlama, and Aave experienced intermittent downtime.

Cloudflare, a vital provider of web security and traffic routing, supports the infrastructure for approximately one-quarter of global websites. Its services are crucial for maintaining online accessibility.

The company confirmed an “internal service degradation” impacting parts of its global network. It identified the cause and began implementing a solution.

Cloudflare reported that services were recovering, though customers might still experience higher-than-normal error rates. “We are seeing services recover, but customers may continue to observe higher than normal error rates,” the company stated.

Global Cloudflare outage

Beyond the crypto sector, the outage also affected major platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the social media platform X, and various government services including the New Jersey transit authority. Moody’s Corp, a financial data provider, was also impacted.

Experts quickly highlighted the systemic vulnerabilities exposed by the incident. David Schwed, COO of SovereignAI, emphasized the need for diversified infrastructure.

“With Cloudflare down today and AWS only a few weeks ago, it is clear that we cannot simply outsource the resilience of our infrastructure to a single provider,” Schwed said. He added that organizations requiring 24/7 operations must build their infrastructure assuming such failures will occur, calling reliance on a single vendor “pure negligence.”

While Cloudflare investigated the issue, it did not confirm any direct link to scheduled maintenance at several of its data centers.

Cloudflare’s shares (NET) fell 3.3% at the market’s opening on Tuesday following news of the outage.

The incident underscores the fragility of the modern web, where a single point of failure can propagate globally. It reinforces calls for businesses to diversify their digital infrastructure to mitigate future risks in an increasingly interconnected ecosystem.
