Ajax’s general director has publicly voiced deep concern over the club’s widespread sporting and administrative instability, just days before a crucial European league match.
Menno Geelen stated in an interview with ‘Voetbal International’ that it “pains” him to see the club in its current condition, acknowledging that expectations are not being met. He asserted that both poor sporting results and management upheaval are “unworthy of Ajax.”
Geelen expressed frustration over club figures trading accusations in the media, calling such behavior “destructive.” He emphasized that this conduct “is not good at all, it bothers me, and it has to change.”
He called for immediate cohesion within the club. “We have to stick together. That generates tranquility, and that is what our club needs right now,” Geelen said.
The general director’s remarks come after a period of significant turmoil for the Amsterdam-based club. Ajax recently saw its technical director depart and the head coach was dismissed.
The team’s roster is also considered unbalanced. Geelen admitted that having “too many coaches in a short time” is uncharacteristic for Ajax.
He outlined a strategy to rebuild stability, starting with hiring a new technical director before appointing a permanent coach. Geelen stressed that “rigor is more important than speed, especially now.”
These statements precede a UEFA Champions League group stage fixture against Benfica, scheduled for October 25.
