Seville’s La Cartuja Stadium has secured the hosting rights for the next three Copa del Rey finals, cementing its status as a key venue in Spanish football amidst ongoing development and a bid for the 2030 World Cup.
Rafael Louzán, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), announced on Monday that the stadium will host the finals for the 2025/26, 2026/27, and 2027/28 seasons.
The first of these upcoming finals is scheduled for April 25 next year.
La Cartuja has been the venue for the last six Copa del Rey finals. Before that recent run, it also hosted two finals in 1998/99 and 2000/01.
The stadium has undergone extensive renovation in recent years. Its capacity has been expanded to nearly 71,000 seats.
This makes La Cartuja the third-largest stadium in Spain, trailing only behind the home grounds of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.
The venue is also a significant part of the joint bid by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The announcement was made at a press conference in the regional capital of Andalusia. Spain’s national team, current European champions, is set to play Turkey at La Cartuja on Tuesday in a European qualification match.
Real Betis is currently using La Cartuja as its temporary home stadium. This arrangement began this season and will continue until 2028.
The temporary move is due to renovation works at Real Betis’s own stadium, Benito Villamarín. Benito Villamarín last hosted a Copa del Rey final in 2018/19 before the event shifted to La Cartuja.
Previous finals held at La Cartuja in 2019/20 and 2020/21 did not permit public attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
