Google’s new real-time video sharing feature for Android emergency calls is set to provide first responders with crucial visual information, enhancing safety and potentially saving lives.
The updated capability allows users to transmit live video feeds directly to emergency operators during a voice call. This enhancement is integrated into Google Play Services version 25.44.
The feature aims to offer a more comprehensive and effective experience for urgent situations. Operators can visually assess incidents as they unfold, helping to determine if immediate on-site intervention is necessary.
Google stated that this change makes “Android devices safer and more reliable.” The company added that it ensures a “quick and accurate response” to emergencies.
A copy of the live recording can be saved and subsequently shared with emergency services for further analysis. Additionally, operators can request camera access during an ongoing call to check on the user’s status.
This move by Android follows a similar enhancement introduced by Apple in iOS 18 for iPhones. The technology aims to improve public safety by providing more immediate context to emergency situations.
The real-time video transmission marks a key innovation, differing from any pre-configured image sharing. It ensures that responders receive dynamic visual data.
This new feature complements existing Google Emergency SOS functionalities already present on Android devices. These established options cover scenarios such as accidents and security issues like theft.
The live video sharing will initially roll out to Pixel phones. It will then be integrated into a wider range of Android devices in subsequent updates.
