Olympic Legend Obikwelu: Sporting Race ‘Vital for Youth, Family’

Olympic silver medalist Francis Obikwelu underscored the Sporting Race’s growing significance for youth development and community engagement as thousands prepare to compete in Lisbon this Sunday.

The Portuguese athletics legend praised the event, which has seen participant numbers surge since its inception. Obikwelu, a silver medalist in the 100 meters at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, highlighted the club’s global reach and its role in nurturing elite athletes.

“We are talking about a global club, not just here in Portugal or Europe, but worldwide,” Obikwelu stated, reflecting on Sporting’s legacy of producing Olympic champions and record holders across various sports. “It’s a club that I respect to this day. It’s like a family.”

The former sprinter noted the remarkable increase in participation. The first edition of the race drew fewer than 5,000 people. This year, organizers expect 12,000 participants to fill the streets of Lisbon.

“It’s incredible,” the 46-year-old said, acknowledging the consistent effort behind its success. “It’s years of merit continuing to work on this.”

Obikwelu emphasized the importance of community events that involve children and young people. “It brings much joy to see it grow,” he remarked. “For me, it’s important for young people and for the family.”

He added that he notices a clear difference when parents run alongside their children, noting the shared happiness. Obikwelu urged Sporting to continue organizing the race annually.
