The tragic incident occurred on Valhallavägen street in the Östermalm district, a northern part of Stockholm, as numerous commuters waited for buses. Three individuals died instantly, and three others sustained serious injuries.

Police swiftly responded to the scene, deploying over 10 officers alongside ambulances and rescue teams. They confirmed the bus driver was taken into custody and charged with negligent homicide, a standard procedure for such grave accidents.

Investigators have not yet determined the exact cause of the crash. Authorities stated the driver would be interviewed as part of the ongoing probe.

The front of the double-decker bus was heavily damaged from the impact. Rescue personnel were observed working under the vehicle, highlighting the severity of the collision.

Swedish media outlets have initially suggested the crash may have been an accident, though they await official findings.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed profound sorrow on X following the news. He remarked on the victims’ disrupted journeys.

“I received the sad news that several people died and were injured at a bus stop in central Stockholm,” Kristersson wrote. “People who may just have been on their way home, to family, friends or a peaceful evening, but never reached their destination.”
