OpenAI Pilots ChatGPT Group Chats: AI Joins as Member

OpenAI is testing a new ChatGPT feature that integrates its artificial intelligence directly into group conversations as an active participant, transforming how users collaborate and communicate.

This new “Group Chats” feature allows the AI to join discussions with friends, family, or colleagues. The AI acts as a direct assistant for tasks such as trip planning, brainstorming, or summarizing documents.

The feature is currently undergoing trials in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.

OpenAI stated the chatbot is trained to “read the atmosphere” of a conversation. It decides when to intervene and when to remain silent. Users can also specifically summon the AI by mentioning “ChatGPT.”

The AI operates using a “GPT-5.1 Auto” model. This model is designed to select the most appropriate response mechanism for various prompts and commands.

Practical applications include the AI assisting with travel itineraries or helping resolve group decisions on venues. Users can also upload documents for instant summaries or report drafting directly within the chat.

Up to 20 participants can join a group. Each member is required to set up a profile including a name, username, and picture.

Group creators can invite members directly or share invite links. Anyone with a link can extend further invitations. General members possess the ability to mute or remove other participants, excluding the group creator.

A key safety measure involves automatic content restriction for sensitive material. This occurs if even one participant is identified as being under 18 years old.

OpenAI emphasized that the feature is in its preliminary testing phase. Feedback from early users is critical for future improvements and a potential wider release.
