Benfica U23s’ Win Slips Away in Injury Time, League Lead Endangered

Benfica’s hold on the Liga Revelação Série B leadership is precarious after a stoppage-time penalty allowed U. Leiria to secure a draw.

The 1-1 tie, played in Seixal, means Benfica risks losing the top spot in the league standings.

Their rival, Torreense, could now overtake them if they win their upcoming match against Estoril on November 25.

Benfica, coached by Vítor Vinha, appeared to be heading for a victory after Gustavo Ferreira scored with a header in the 87th minute.

Francisco Neto provided the assist from the left side of the attack, putting Benfica in front late in the game.

However, U. Leiria, currently fourth in the standings, fought back fiercely in the final moments.

The equalizer came from a penalty awarded in the 95th minute of injury time.

Pedro Oliveira converted the spot-kick, leaving Benfica goalkeeper Voitinovicius with no chance.

This match was part of the 13th round of the Liga Revelação. Another match in the competition, Sporting versus Santa Clara (third place), is scheduled for this afternoon in the Azores.
