Diego Ribas Favors Jorge Jesus: “He was with me in the most critical moment”

Former Brazilian midfielder Diego has named Jorge Jesus as the coach who had a greater overall influence on his career, prioritizing personal support during a severe injury and intense public scrutiny over the tactical mentorship received from Diego Simeone.

Diego stated that Jesus “found me at a very special moment” during his final years at Flamengo, a period marked by immense exposure and criticism from fans and the press. He emphasized the need for “courageous people” who would not abandon him amidst the pressure.

The 40-year-old midfielder recounted a pivotal moment when he broke his leg. While recovering at home, Jesus called and texted him after a 3-0 victory, saying, “I haven’t forgotten you. I need you. Stay strong, motivated, keep going. This team needs you.”

This unwavering backing during his “most critical moment” solidified Jesus’s impact. “Jorge Jesus for everything,” Diego declared, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the Portuguese coach’s influence.

While favoring Jesus, Diego still highly praised Diego Simeone, who coached him at Atlético Madrid. Simeone was crucial for his “evolution as a player” and convinced him to adapt to a right-wing role, valuing collective work.

“He convinced me of this, made me enjoy it,” Diego said of Simeone’s tactical guidance. He expressed deep admiration for Simeone’s influence on his career and character.

The choice came during a career retrospective interview with Brazilian legend Romário.

Diego began his career at Santos before moving to European clubs, including FC Porto. He returned to Brazil in 2016 to join Flamengo.

His tenure at FC Porto between 2004 and 2006 yielded a Portuguese League title, a Portuguese Super Cup, a Portuguese Cup, and a Club World Cup.

However, Diego’s most decorated period was with Flamengo, where he secured two Brasileirão titles, one Copa do Brasil, two Supercopas do Brasil, four Campeonato Carioca titles, two Copa Libertadores, and one Recopa Sudamericana.
