Google Maps Prepares ‘Prefer Shade’ Feature for Sun-Free Walking Routes

Google Maps is preparing a new feature designed to help pedestrians avoid direct sun exposure by offering routes that prioritize shaded paths, enhancing user comfort and safety.

The forthcoming tool, internally referred to as “Prefer Shade,” will allow users to select walking directions that minimize time spent in direct sunlight. This is particularly aimed at improving navigation during summer months and in hot climates.

Early reports, based on a preliminary version of the application, indicate the “Prefer Shade” option will be accessible within the travel options menu. It is expected to appear directly below existing navigation controls.

While the feature is not yet active, Google is anticipated to release further details on its functionality in the coming weeks.

It remains unclear how Google intends to acquire the necessary data to identify shaded areas accurately. Speculation suggests the company could employ LiDAR scanning technology or integrate information from various data sources to map shaded segments along a route.

Although third-party applications already exist that allow users to plan activities based on sun position, integrating this capability directly into Google Maps could transform it into an indispensable tool for millions globally.

This new functionality aligns with recent updates to Google Maps, including the ongoing integration of Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence assistant. Gemini has begun rolling out to Maps users in the United States and is expected to expand to other countries progressively.
