Deepika Padukone: ‘I Worked on My Own Terms in Hollywood,’ Citing Discrimination

Deepika Padukone is setting clear terms for her career in Hollywood, asserting her intention to work on her own conditions rather than conforming to prevailing stereotypes about Indians. The acclaimed actress, who built her reputation in Bollywood without a film background, has always prioritized her professional boundaries. Her insistence on an eight-hour workday, for instance, has led her to turn down significant projects in the past.

Padukone recently spoke with CNBC TV, sharing her perspective on the “worn-out image” of Indians often held abroad. She openly discussed encountering discrimination in Hollywood, citing instances related to casting, accents, and skin color. Padukone emphasized her commitment to showcasing India to the world on her own terms, refusing to accept roles or expectations that align with global audience stereotypes.

During her international travels, she frequently observed the persistent, outdated perceptions of Indians. This outdated view often meant talent was overlooked in favor of offering stereotypical roles. Padukone was resolute that her work in Hollywood would be on her own terms, regardless of how long it took.

She recalled a moment of immense pride while in Los Angeles, seeing her face displayed on numerous hoardings along Sunset Boulevard for an international luxury brand campaign. Padukone described the experience as initially strange, then deeply gratifying. Witnessing a brown face on a global luxury brand advertisement was a rare sight, and she felt it represented a victory for every Indian woman.

Padukone made her Hollywood debut in 2017 alongside Vin Diesel in ‘XXX: Return of Xander Cage.’ Since then, she has signed various international brand endorsements, maintaining a consistent global presence. While she has not yet appeared in another Hollywood film, her recent statements underscore her selective approach. On the Bollywood front, Padukone is currently filming ‘King’ with Shah Rukh Khan and is also reportedly involved in a project with Atlee and Allu Arjun, provisionally titled ‘AA22xA6’.
