Portugal’s Under-17 national football team, having already secured qualification for the knockout stage of the World Cup, is now aiming for the top spot in Group B against Japan, with a crucial defender emphasizing the squad’s determined mindset.
Central defender Mauro Furtado articulated this ambition, stating the team’s objective to “give a good response and finish in first place.” He acknowledged the upcoming match against Japan, scheduled for Sunday, would be challenging.
“We expect a complicated game, as we have also lost to them,” Furtado told the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). He added, “That is the most important thing now.”
The Portuguese squad achieved an almost flawless record in the group stage so far, guaranteeing their spot in the Round of 16 with two decisive victories. They defeated both New Caledonia and Morocco.
Furtado, who plays for Benfica, has been a standout performer for the team. He contributed significantly in both defense and attack, scoring a goal in the opening fixture of the tournament.
He credited the team’s consistent approach to every game. “We did what the coach asked, we gave a good response,” Furtado noted. He further explained that the team executes what they practice.
Furtado highlighted the team’s careful preparation, including not underestimating New Caledonia despite knowing they were the weakest opponent. He also mentioned thoroughly studying Morocco.
“It’s always good to help the team,” Furtado said. He concluded by thanking the coach for his confidence, reinforcing that all efforts are “always all for the group.”
