A public health alert has been issued for Utrecht, Netherlands, advising residents in several areas to boil their tap water due to bacterial contamination. Local health services in the Utrecht region detected the presence of Enterococcus bacteria in the municipal water supply.
Water company Vitens has since advised residents in 11 zones within the province to boil water for at least three minutes before consumption. The affected areas include Utrecht, Bilthoven, Forest and Dune, The Bilt, Bunnik, Greenkan, Maarssen, Old Columns, Tienhoven, Westbroek, and Zeist.
The boiling recommendation applies to water used for drinking, brushing teeth, and preparing food or beverages like coffee, tea, lemonade, or for washing vegetables.
The alert was first issued last Saturday. The contamination comes as Portuguese football club FC Porto is scheduled to play Utrecht in a match at the Galgenwaard Stadium in Utrecht.
