A catastrophic fire and explosion at a supermarket in Hermosillo, Mexico, has resulted in the deaths of at least 23 people, including several children, prompting a swift national response.
The Mexican Red Cross confirmed the casualty figures. Carlos Freaner Figueroa, President of the organization, stated, “There are already 23 dead, 12 women, 5 men, 4 girls and 2 boys.”
Dozens more were injured in the incident. Initial reports indicate at least 12 people were hospitalized across various facilities. These included seven to ISSSTE Hospital, one to IMSS Clinic, two to Noroeste Clinic, and two to a Specialized State Hospital.
The tragedy occurred around 3:00 PM local time on Saturday, November 1. The supermarket was reportedly crowded with customers. Many were shopping for month-end provisions and preparing for the upcoming Day of the Dead celebrations.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences. She posted on social media, “My deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died in the fire at the commercial premises in the center of Hermosillo.”
President Sheinbaum contacted Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo to offer federal assistance. She ordered the Interior Minister to dispatch an aid team to support the affected families.
Governor Durazo affirmed that state authorities would provide all necessary support to those impacted.
Emergency services, including firefighters, police, and civil defense units, are operating at the site. The area remains cordoned off as investigators work to determine the cause of the fire and explosion.
