NBA Referees to Begin Wearing Earpieces for VAR Communication

The National Basketball Association will introduce a new system this weekend, equipping referees with earpieces in a two-phase plan designed to enhance decision accuracy and streamline communication with its replay center.

The initial phase begins Saturday, with all NBA referees receiving the new earpiece technology. They will utilize the devices only during play reviews and other game stoppages.

This approach aims to improve officiating precision without disrupting the pace of live play. Referees will keep the earpiece attached to their uniform, inserting it into their ear only when needed.

The ultimate goal of the program is to establish constant communication between officials on the court and the replay center.

A second phase is slated to begin in January, following an evaluation of the initial rollout. During this stage, referees will wear the earpiece continuously, maintaining contact with the replay center even during ongoing game action.
