Global Best-Seller Toyota Corolla Reinvented: Dramatic Design, EV/ICE Options, Tech Interior

Toyota is reinventing its iconic Corolla hatchback for a 13th generation, unveiled as a concept, with a focus on diverse powertrains and a radical new design aimed at maintaining its global bestseller status amidst varying market demands for electrification.

The new model will offer choices including electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and internal combustion engines. This approach contrasts with some rivals moving purely to electric vehicles, allowing Toyota to cater to different customer preferences worldwide.

“It’s about giving everyone the right choice. We don’t want to leave anyone behind,” stated Toyota designer Lance Scott, emphasizing the company’s commitment to individual customer needs. He added that the Corolla is “a car for the majority, but the majority doesn’t necessarily want the same answer.”

The concept, presented at the Tokyo Motor Show, showcases a “dramatic look” and “latest generation interior technology,” representing a complete departure from the current model’s design language.

The Corolla has sold over 50 million units globally since its launch in 1966, establishing its position as one of the world’s most popular cars. Scott affirmed the company’s goal to “reinvent the best-selling car of all time” without compromising space, style, or functionality.

Designed at Toyota’s European center in Nice, France, the concept features a minimalist, technology-focused interior with very few physical controls. Key functions are accessible through touch sensors on the steering wheel, an optional passenger touchscreen, and a new satellite touch panel.

The absence of a transmission tunnel allows for a “floating” central panel, which houses the drive selector and phone controls. Scott clarified that this new direction is not intended to push the Corolla into the luxury market.

The current seventh-year generation of the Corolla is nearing the end of its natural life cycle, with a successor expected next year. Toyota has not yet provided a planned launch date for the 13th generation.

The unveiled concept remains “a vision” for now, but positive feedback from the public could influence the company’s decision regarding its production.
