A recent update to Counter-Strike 2 has reshaped the in-game economy for cosmetic items, creating a stark divide between players celebrating newly affordable virtual goods and investors facing significant financial losses. The market for these digital “skins” reportedly lost an estimated $2 billion in value last week following changes introduced by developer Valve.
The update now allows players to exchange five “covert” rarity items for a random knife or glove from an existing collection, significantly increasing the supply of these previously rare and expensive items. This change immediately drove down prices for some high-end items, making them accessible to a wider player base.
Veteran Counter-Strike player Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo commented on social media, questioning whether the initial accessibility of knives and gloves would be sustained. He suggested that “base” items might become more expensive over time, while high-value items remain cheaper.
Knives and gloves more accessible initially with this new update, folks? I think over time these ‘base’ items will become more expensive and knives and gloves will have a cheaper price.
I don’t remember if I have many red items to try and get a good one, will I?— Gabriel Toledo (@FalleNCS) October 23, 2025
For instance, knife skins like the Navaja and Shadow Daggers, which previously sold for around 700 Brazilian Reais (approximately $140 USD), are now priced at about 300 Reais (roughly $60 USD) in some markets.
Cachorro1337, known for owning one of Brazil’s most valuable in-game inventories, described the phenomenon as “democratized skins.” He stated that while the update is “terrible” for collectors with extensive skin assets, it is “great” for the majority of the community.
Cheaper knives and gloves, are they bad? For the collector with a lot of skin assets: It’s TERRIBLE!!! For most of the community: GREAT.
Desired skins finally ‘democratized.’ I found the update positive, no matter who it hurts.— Cachorro1337 (@Cachorro1337) October 23, 2025
The long-term impact on the CS2 market remains uncertain. Analysts suggest prices could either fall further or rebound once the trade lock on newly acquired items expires. For now, many players are taking advantage of the reduced prices to acquire desirable cosmetic items.
