Sporting Lisbon executed a significant second-half turnaround against Kolstad, securing a 34-30 victory in the Champions League handball after overcoming a four-goal deficit at halftime.
Head coach Ricardo Costa credited a heightened defensive focus and tactical adjustments for the dramatic shift in momentum. The team had trailed Kolstad 19-15 at the break.
Costa explained that the game had “two completely distinct parts.” He acknowledged initial “technical failures” in the first half which Kolstad capitalized on, particularly highlighting Simen Lyse’s effective outside shots.
“At halftime, we realized we had to be more cohesive defensively,” Costa told Sporting’s official website. “When we managed to counter the first-line play, we helped our goalkeeper more and it’s saves that win games.”
He expressed confidence in his team’s performance following the adjustments. “I believe we played a great second half,” Costa stated.
The coach also noted his satisfaction with the team’s overall Champions League journey, placing them among the top contenders in the standings.
Despite the victory, the schedule remains demanding. Costa highlighted the need for immediate rest as the team prepares for a domestic league match against Avanca on Friday, requiring travel the following day.
