Bangkok is hosting the largest Diwali festival outside India, a strategic move aimed at significantly boosting tourism revenue and strengthening cultural ties with the high-potential Indian market.
The “Amazing Thailand Grand Diwali Festival 2025,” running from October 16 to 31, is projected to generate at least $5.4 million in tourism income. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has positioned the event with the theme “Light Unites Us.”
Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, Atthakorn Sirilatthayakorn, emphasized the festival’s role in connecting Thailand internationally through culture and goodwill. He stated it is a crucial mechanism to elevate Thailand as a global tourism destination.
The festival seeks to create new experiences for visitors, promote a sustainable circular economy, and creatively link Thai culture with international audiences. It also aims to deepen Thai-Indian relations, fostering cultural exchange and mutual tourism promotion.
Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the TAT, highlighted Diwali as a pivotal celebration for Indians worldwide, marking the “victory of light over darkness.” She underscored the Indian market’s importance, noting it is one of Thailand’s top three sources of international tourist arrivals.
The opening ceremony on October 19 was attended by Minister Sirilatthayakorn, along with Ms. Paoloami Tripathi, Chargé d’Affaires of the Indian Embassy in Thailand, and other senior officials. The event featured Thai-Indian cultural performances and a parade.
The festival spans Bangkok’s historic Phahurat Road and the Khlong Ong Ang canal, areas with over 200 years of Indian community heritage. Phahurat Road will be illuminated with intricate lighting and multimedia displays daily from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. local time.
From October 18-20, Phahurat will host four daily rounds of Thai-Indian cultural performances, including classical and contemporary dance forms. Mini-concerts by popular artists are also scheduled.
Khlong Ong Ang canal will feature colorful lights reflecting on the water, adorned with Rangoli art and hundreds of Diyas lamps. Cultural shows will take place on a sub-stage along the canal from October 16-20.
The “Amazing Thailand Grand Diwali Privilege 2025” program offers Indian tourists and attendees souvenir candles and special discounts from participating partners. These include major retail and hospitality groups.
This extensive Diwali celebration reflects Bangkok’s diverse cultural landscape, aiming to create an atmosphere of joy and optimism while stimulating local economic activity and tourism.
