Funchal, Portugal – Nacional coach Tiago Margarido is navigating a complex squad selection ahead of the club’s Portuguese Cup third-round match, balancing the return of key players from injury, an unexpected early international arrival, and a significant international absence.
Captain João Aurélio has fully recovered and trained without limitations, making him available for selection for Saturday’s away match against Rebordelo, scheduled for 11:00 AM local time (UTC+1). Despite his return, Margarido is expected to retain Alan Nuñez, who performed well in a recent league fixture, potentially keeping the captain on the bench.
Adding to the coach’s considerations, Venezuelan international Chucho Ramírez returned to Madeira earlier than expected after his country’s friendly match against Belize was canceled. Nacional’s top scorer with six goals this season, Ramírez is now available for the Cup tie, though Lucas João might start in his place to allow the Venezuelan to rest. Ramírez has played 692 minutes across eight league games this season, one of only four players to feature in every minute.
Conversely, Mozambican international Witi Quembo was notably absent from Tuesday afternoon’s training session. The winger was on duty with his national team for a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Guinea and is not expected back until Thursday.
Further complicating squad depth, four players remain sidelined with long-term injuries: Lucas França, Daniel Júnior, Miguel Baeza, and Ivanildo Fernandes. All are continuing their rehabilitation with the club’s medical department.
The team returned to training following a three-and-a-half-day break. Their next session is scheduled for Wednesday at 10:30 AM local time (UTC+1) at Estádio da Madeira, which will be held behind closed doors.
