Palhinha Blames ‘Lack of Concentration’ for Portugal’s Qualification Delay

Portuguese midfielder João Palhinha blamed a “lack of concentration” for his national team’s 2-2 draw against Hungary, a result that has delayed Portugal’s qualification for the World Cup.

Palhinha, who plays for Tottenham, expressed frustration with the outcome. He stated Portugal “could have killed the game earlier” but instead “put ourselves in a difficult position.”

The stalemate means Portugal’s World Cup berth remains unconfirmed. They are now “one step away from qualification,” according to Palhinha.

The midfielder also highlighted tactical shortcomings, noting the team “failed on second balls.” He added that Portugal should have “kept the ball at our feet,” describing it as “the best way to defend.”

He acknowledged Hungary’s “superior physical level” and stature. Despite the setback, Palhinha refuted the idea that it was Portugal’s “worst game” of the qualifying campaign, emphasizing they “played against a good team with a lot of quality.”

Portugal aims to secure their qualification during the November international break.
