2025 U-20 World Cup: Mexico Crushes Host Chile 4-1, Advances to Quarterfinals

Hugo Camberos celebrates a goal for the Mexico national team in the U-20 World Cup

The atmosphere in Valparaíso was buzzing. Host nation Chile, playing on their home turf, faced a tough test against Mexico in the U-20 World Cup. By the time the final whistle blew on Tuesday, it was Mexico celebrating a dominant 4-1 victory. This big win secured their spot in the quarterfinals of the 2025 tournament.

Mexico started strong. Tahiel Jiménez broke the deadlock at the 26-minute mark, putting his team up 1-0 before halftime. The crowd, full of Chilean hope, grew a little quiet. The second half, however, saw Mexico really turn on the style. Iker Fimbres added another goal in the 67th minute, extending their lead and making things harder for the hosts.

Then came Hugo Camberos. He entered the game in the 76th minute and quickly made his mark. Camberos scored two goals in quick succession, first at 80 minutes and again at 86 minutes. This incredible burst of scoring completely blew the game open. Chile managed to pull one back late, with Juan Rossel scoring in the 88th minute. But it was far too little, too late. Mexico’s comprehensive performance left no doubt about who deserved to advance.

Looking ahead, Mexico now waits for their next opponent. They will face the winner of Wednesday’s match between Argentina and Nigeria. Argentina holds an impressive record in this tournament, with a remarkable six titles to their name.

This competition always brings out the best young talent, but it is also incredibly tough. Portugal, for example, failed to qualify for this current edition. Despite missing out this year, they have a rich history in the U-20 World Cup. Portugal lifted the trophy twice, first in 1989 in Saudi Arabia, and again in 1991 when they hosted the event. They also reached the final in 2011 in Colombia, finishing as runner-up, and secured third place in 1995 in Qatar.
