Rajkumar Hirani on Satyajit Ray: Filmmaker Recalls Watching ‘Pather Panchali’ in Film School

Rajkumar Hirani, the visionary behind beloved films like ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘PK’, recently shared his admiration for cinematic legend Satyajit Ray. He spoke about how deeply Ray’s work has impacted him and many others in the film world. It seems even today’s most successful directors look to the masters for inspiration.

Hirani, also known for ‘Munna Bhai M.B.B.S’, highlighted Ray’s films as truly groundbreaking. Ray changed the way stories were told on screen and shaped Indian cinema for generations. Hirani proudly calls himself a huge fan, noting that Ray’s genius is something everyone appreciates.

He explained his connection during a chat with ANI. “I went to a film school,” Hirani recalled, “and there were weeks and months we would just watch Ray films.” It wasn’t just him; this deep dive into Ray’s movies was a common experience. “We all are huge fans,” he stated, adding that “Not a single soul in this country would not admire Ray’s films.” From the iconic ‘Pather Panchali’ to other works, they watched them all, soaking in the lessons.

Hirani’s own career began with a bang in 2003 with ‘Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.’ That film was a huge success. After that, he went on to direct hits like ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’, ‘3 Idiots’, ‘PK’, and ‘Sanju’. Audiences of all ages have loved these films. What makes his movies stand out is how he perfectly blends touching emotions with humor. This unique style has made him a truly special filmmaker in the eyes of many.
