A bright young climber, Ballin Miller, just 23, died after falling from a giant cliff. The tragic accident happened at El Capitan, a famous rock face in Yosemite National Park, California. Miller was a well-known climber and social media star from Alaska. He was reportedly live-streaming on TikTok when he fell.
The incident occurred on a Wednesday, October 1. His death has deeply shaken his family and the climbing world. News outlets like CNN reported the sad event on October 4.
His mother, Jeanine Girard-Mooreman, shared her deep sorrow online. “My heart is shattered into pieces,” she wrote. “I don’t know how I will get through this. I loved him so much. I just want to wake up from this nightmare.”
Dylan Miller, Ballin’s older brother, offered more details. He explained that Ballin was doing a solo climb using a rope on a route called “Sea of Dreams.” This part of the cliff stands over 730 meters tall. Dylan believes Ballin may have been pulling up his gear when he slipped. He might have lost hold of the rope’s end during this critical moment.
Tom Evans, a photographer at Yosemite, saw parts of the accident. He said Miller was trying to free a stuck bag before he fell. Evans quickly called 911 for help. Park rangers and rescue teams arrived quickly. Despite their efforts, they could not save Ballin Miller’s life.
Miller was known as an incredibly skilled climber. He had made a name for himself with several difficult climbs. One of his notable feats was a solo climb of the “Slovak Direct” on Mount McKinley in Alaska. He finished that demanding route in just 56 hours. He also conquered the “Reality Bath” ice route in the Canadian Rockies. No one had completed that climb in over 37 years. His loss leaves a big hole in the close-knit climbing community.
