A dramatic confrontation unfolded at sea as Israeli forces stopped a group of ships carrying aid and activists toward Gaza. Reports confirm 13 vessels from the “Global Sumud Flotilla” were intercepted. Among the passengers was Greta Thunberg, the famous climate campaigner, whose presence brought significant attention to the mission.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry shared a video on its verified X account, later confirmed by Reuters. It showed Thunberg sitting on a ship’s deck, surrounded by soldiers. The ministry stated that several ships, which they called the “Hamas-Sumud” flotilla, were safely stopped. Passengers, including Greta and her companions, were taken to an Israeli port, with officials assuring their safety.

The Global Sumud Flotilla aimed to deliver vital medicine and food to Gaza, a region heavily impacted by conflict. This large humanitarian convoy included over 40 civilian vessels and about 500 people. Among them were members of parliament, lawyers, and various activists. The flotilla’s organizers posted videos on Telegram. Some passengers showed their passports, claiming they were abducted and taken to Israel against their will. They stressed that their mission was purely humanitarian and non-violent.

This interception quickly sparked sharp criticism from around the globe. Many countries, especially those with citizens on board, spoke out. Turkey’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned Israel’s actions, calling them “terrorist acts.” They warned such actions put innocent civilian lives at risk.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also denounced the interception. He confirmed that eight Malaysian citizens were detained by Israeli forces. Mr. Anwar stated that by blocking this humanitarian effort, Israel showed deep disregard. This disrespect was not just for the rights of Palestinians but for global conscience itself.

Israel’s Stance and Flotilla’s Resolve

Before the interception, the Israeli Navy had warned the flotilla. They stated the ships were entering a combat zone and breaking a lawful blockade. Israel offered a peaceful way to transfer aid through secure channels into Gaza.

Flotilla organizers, however, called the raid a “war crime.” They accused the military of using aggressive tactics, including high-pressure water cannons. Despite this, no one was reported injured. The organizers maintained that many ships were illegally boarded in international waters. They declared their firm intention to continue their journey.

Ship tracking data on Thursday morning showed 13 vessels had been stopped or halted. But the organizers insisted that 30 other ships were still sailing. These remaining ships were about 46 nautical miles from their goal. They hoped to reach Gaza by Thursday morning if not intercepted.

Historical Context

Israel has maintained a naval blockade on Gaza since 2007. This began after Hamas took control of the area. There have been many similar attempts to break this blockade over the years. One such event in 2010 turned violent. Israeli soldiers boarded a flotilla ship, leading to the deaths of nine activists.
