Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban Divorce: Busy Careers, Custody Details

The entertainment world was truly caught off guard when news broke of Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s split. After nearly two decades together, the power couple decided to go their separate ways. It left many wondering how these two stars would navigate life after such a long marriage.

According to reports from a prominent news channel, Us Weekly, a source close to the former couple shared some insights. This person revealed that their demanding work schedules stayed pretty much the same throughout their marriage. There wasn’t anything new in that department that suddenly pushed them apart, they explained.

Both Urban, who is 57, and Kidman, 58, are now pouring their energy into their careers. The country music superstar has been on his High and Alive World Tour since May. He also has upcoming shows for his Las Vegas residency. Plus, he’s busy working alongside Gretchen Wilson and Blake Shelton on CBS’s reality series, The Road. Insiders say Urban is constantly on the move. He’s been touring since June and spent August down in Australia.

Kidman, on the other hand, juggles her many projects with being there for her kids. She shares two teenage daughters, Sunday, 17, and Faith, 14, with Urban. The Oscar winner also has two adult children, Isabella, 32, and Connor, 30, whom she adopted with her ex-husband, Tom Cruise.

Sources say Nicole has always managed to be a force in her work while staying present in her children’s lives. She’s at the top of her game career-wise. Yet, she remains a working mom who always puts her kids first. It’s hard to compare her schedule to any other active actor, the source added.

In recent years, Kidman has graced our screens in hit TV shows. Think Big Little Lies, which just got the green light for a third season, Nine Perfect Strangers, and The Perfect Couple. She also appeared in Babygirl and A Family Affair in 2024. Her movie Holland came out earlier this year. More recently, she finished filming Practical Magic 2 with Sandra Bullock.

The busy lives of Urban and Kidman played a role in their separation, as they were "moving in two different directions," a source told Us Weekly. Nicole reportedly tried to work on their marriage. She didn’t want the news to go public, keeping it secret for months from many friends. Both had spent a lot of time apart due to work. They were living quite independent lives, and "she and Keith weren’t on the same page."

News of their separation, after 19 years of marriage, became public on Monday, September 29. The couple had first met in 2005 and tied the knot in 2006.

Just one day after the public announcement, Kidman filed for divorce. Court papers obtained by Us Weekly showed Kidman cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason. She also asked to be named the "primary parent" for their two daughters.

The divorce papers also included a detailed agreement. It covered a parenting plan, child support, and even an "order for parenting seminar." Both Kidman and Urban agreed to keep their own assets. They also waived any spousal and child support claims. However, one part of the divorce papers mentioned that Urban had already "pre-paid all of his child support obligations."

The court-filed plan outlines how Sunday and Faith will spend their time. They will be with Kidman for 306 days each year. Urban will have them for 59 days, which includes alternating weekends. The former spouses agreed to make all big decisions about their daughters together. If they can’t agree on a major decision for either child, Kidman will have the "final decision-making authority," as per the plan.
