A fresh wave of worry has hit the entertainment industry. It comes after a new ‘actress’ named Tilly Norwood stepped into the spotlight. The catch? Tilly isn’t human; she’s entirely built by artificial intelligence. Her Dutch creator says big talent agencies are already interested. This has sparked a heated debate, with many questioning the future of human performers.
Tilly Norwood appears as a young, friendly woman. Her social media pages show photos and short, funny videos made by AI. She seems like a “girl next door.” Her creators wrote on her page, “I might be AI, but I’m feeling real emotions right now. I’m so excited for what’s coming!”
The arrival of Tilly Norwood quickly drew sharp criticism. SAG-AFTRA, the powerful actors’ union, spoke out against her. Famous actors like Emily Blunt, Natasha Lyonne, and Whoopi Goldberg also voiced concerns.
SAG-AFTRA stated clearly that Norwood “is not an actor.” They said she is “a character created by a computer program.” This program learned from the work of many professional actors. The union added, “It has no life experience to draw from. It has no emotions. And from what we’ve seen, audiences aren’t interested in watching computer-generated content without human experience.”
Eline van der Velden, a Dutch actor and comedian, created Tilly Norwood. She hopes Tilly will become “the next Scarlett Johansson.” Amidst the anger from Hollywood, Van der Velden defended her creation on Tilly’s Instagram. She wrote that Tilly “does not replace humans” but is “a creation, a piece of art.”
Van der Velden believes making Tilly took “imagination and craftsmanship.” She said it is like “drawing a character, writing a role, or shaping a performance.” She feels these works should be judged “as part of their own type,” not directly against human actors.
Actor and comedian Whoopi Goldberg shared her thoughts on the talk show “The View.” She thinks audiences can easily tell the difference between humans and AI performers. Goldberg does not believe AI will completely steal jobs from human actors. She pointed out that humans “move differently. Our faces move differently. Our bodies move differently.”
Reports suggest Tilly Norwood gained much attention in Hollywood recently. Her creators presented her at a summit in Zurich over the weekend. The news also hints that some Hollywood studios and agencies are quietly accepting AI use. We might hear big announcements about this technology in major projects very soon.
