Russian Mom, Kids From India Cave Return to Russia After Custody Dispute

A Russian mother and her two young daughters, whose unusual life in an Indian cave caught global attention, have finally made it back to their homeland. Nina Kutina, 40, and her girls, aged five and six, returned to Russia in late September. This journey marked the end of a strange chapter. It also concluded a legal battle for the children’s future.

Authorities first found Nina and her children this past July. Police officers were patrolling a forest in Goa, India. They noticed bright clothes hanging near a cave entrance. A small blonde girl then ran out. Inside, officers discovered Nina with her other child. Their home was stark, just a plastic mat, some instant noodles, and a few personal items.

Despite the rough setup, Nina insisted they were happy. She told police that snakes and animals were her friends. She called other people dangerous.

The family moved to an immigration detention center. That’s when the story grew more complex. Dror Shlomo Goldstein, an Israeli businessman living in Goa, stepped forward. He claimed to be the father of the two younger girls. Goldstein tried to stop their return to Russia. He asked an Indian court for custody rights.

The Goa High Court reviewed the case. It noted Goldstein’s claims of supporting the family. But he couldn’t explain why they lived in a cave. The court decided the family could go home. The Russian Embassy provided emergency travel papers. These documents were valid from September 26 to October 9. Nina, her two daughters, and an older son from a previous relationship flew back on September 28.

This whole saga grabbed headlines worldwide. Many questions still hang in the air. Why did a mother choose to live in a cave? What was her true relationship with the Israeli businessman? Was she truly trying to escape society for nature?

News of this journey was first reported by the BBC.
