Rui Silva, FC Porto Terminate Contract Following Handball Coach’s Legal Action

FC Porto quietly shared a significant update on its website this week. The club announced the termination of Rui Silva’s contract. Silva had been the assistant coach for the handball team. He worked under Carlos Resende during the 2023/24 season.

This agreement formally severed the ties between Silva and the Dragons. Beyond his role with the main squad, Silva also led the Porto B team. He coached them in the Second Division for the same 2023/24 season.

This resolution came after a period of friction. Silva had taken the matter to court to settle the disagreement. His departure from the club was not consensual, prompting the legal step. Despite the legal battle, Silva expressed deep loyalty to FC Porto. “Nothing drives me against the FC Porto institution,” he stated clearly. “FC Porto belongs to everyone, not just a few.” He shared his profound personal connection. “FC Porto was my home for many years,” he continued. “I grew up here as both an athlete and a coach.” He also felt immense gratitude for the support he received. “My thanks to the club and its history are huge,” he concluded.

Silva is currently the head coach of AEK Athens in Greece. Before his time at FC Porto, he also coached Sporting. He served as an assistant to the Serbian coach Ljubobir Obradovic. His career shows a broad experience in the sport.

Our colleagues at Record tried to reach Rui Silva for his comments. However, the coach did not provide a response.
