Bruno Bichir details “purification” after dark Kiss of the Spider Woman prison warden role

Mexican actor Bruno Bichir found himself in a very different role for the upcoming film, Kiss of the Spider Woman (2025). He openly admits he dreamed of singing and dancing in the movie. After all, he played the memorable master of ceremonies in the Mexican run of Cabaret. But fate had another plan for him. He became the prison warden, the only character not part of the film’s musical world. He explained that since the authors are the same, it feels crazy he didn’t get a singing part. Bichir loves to sing and dance, and musicals are a passion. Still, he’s very grateful his character stays out of that musical universe. He calls his role "chillingly earthly" and "stripped of all beauty."

At 56, Bichir shared in a chat with a prominent entertainment publication that taking on such a grim character meant exploring the ugliest parts of being human. He described his character’s office as ugly, from the lighting to the costumes, the backgrounds, the walls, and the desk. Everything looked horrible. He said it truly shows a "nasty, dusty, rough, infamous, brutal, hurtful, Machiavellian system." It brings to life the darkness of military rule in many Latin American countries. He felt lucky to tell that story and play a character he finds "despicable." He believes someone has to show these hard truths.

The actor thought of movies like Midnight Express to explain these complex roles. He noted how the prison chief in that film was terrifying. Yet, in one scene, his children visit him. This showed a contrast, how such a monster could be a loving father. Bichir believes the strength of his own character is that you never know if he’s good or bad. He’s probably a good man to his family, and that makes the role truly chilling.

This very idea of good and evil living side-by-side helped him connect with old wounds in the region. He stated that anyone who reads the news knows what happened in Argentina during those times. It remains that nation’s "great Vietnam," a pain that still shakes generation after generation. To tell this part of history feels crucial right now. He feels grateful to have played that darkness and bring it to light.

The job took a toll on him, both physically and emotionally. Bichir confessed he sweats and gets stressed by his work. He thinks he loses weight every time he films. While filming in Uruguay, he would return to the hotel completely exhausted. "Drained" is the right word. He suspects there’s an unspoken energy exchanged when one acts. He calls it a "demonic pact" or, hopefully, one with angels. At its best, there’s a letting go.

To tap into such deep emotions, the actor finds inspiration in art and humanity’s darkest expressions. He mentioned Goya’s painting, Saturn Devouring His Son, as one of the most terrifying pieces he has ever seen. It’s horrible and dreadful, but it moves him. He says it shows what humans are capable of: killing children and laughing at the same time. This disturbs him, and connecting with it is what an actor must do. It’s about showing the world our horrors and drawing attention to what truly hurts.

After bringing such intensity to life on screen, Bichir needs a way to cleanse his spirit. He revealed that afterward, he has to clean himself. This means singing mantras, kissing his wife, and being thankful that it was "only a performance."

With over forty years in the business, Bruno Bichir is known for his wide range as an actor in film and TV. He has appeared in movies like Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018), The Quarry (2020), Che: Part One (2008), and Solo (1996). His TV work includes international series such as Narcos (2016) and Titans (2018), where he played Dr. Niles Caulder, also known as "The Chief." He also starred in the Mexican show Las azules (2024), taking on the role of a chilling serial killer. In Mexico, he has shined in theater, television, and independent cinema, proving himself as a standout member of the Bichir acting family.

When asked about rumors of possible Oscar nominations for Kiss of the Spider Woman, the actor remained humble. He said he doesn’t know if that will happen, or even if he’d be invited. He simply wishes the best for the film because it deserves it. He feels proud to be part of something important, something so balanced with light and darkness. The movie, he believes, shows both our worst horrors and our greatest good qualities.

The lead roles in Kiss of the Spider Woman are powerfully played by Jennifer Lopez as Ingrid Luna, Diego Luna as Valentín Arregui, Tonatiuh as Luis Molina, Josefina Scaglione as Marta, and Bruno Bichir as the prison warden.

Kiss of the Spider Woman, based on the novel by Argentine writer Manuel Puig, hits theaters in the United States on October 10.
