Russia Vows No EU-NATO Attack, Lavrov Condemns Israel’s Gaza Slaughter

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, Russia’s top diplomat delivered a layered message. He reassured some nations while sharply criticizing others. On Saturday, September 27, 2025, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declared Russia has no plans to attack the European Union or NATO member states. However, he warned that any aggressive acts against Russia would be met with a firm response.

Lavrov noted that threats from Western countries towards Russia have become increasingly common. This trend follows recent incidents where drones crossed into Russian airspace. He linked these events to what he described as growing Western intimidation.

Focus on the Middle East

The Russian minister also directed strong words toward Israel. While he condemned the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, he stated there was “no valid reason” for the extensive killing of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. He also criticized any plans to incorporate the West Bank into Israel. Israel maintains its operations in Gaza are necessary to dismantle Hamas. Yet, Lavrov went further, condemning Israel’s aggression against other countries in the Middle East. He specifically mentioned Israel using its mission to eliminate Hamas as a justification for airstrikes on other nations, including Qatar.

Iran Sanctions and Western Diplomacy

Turning to Iran, Lavrov accused powerful Western nations of “undermining diplomacy.” His remarks came after Russia and China tried to delay new United Nations sanctions against Iran. Their efforts failed on Friday. These sanctions were set to take effect at midnight on Sunday, September 28.

A week before Lavrov’s speech, several NATO member countries reported drone incursions near their airports. Denmark, one of the affected nations, believes “professionals” were behind these incidents. However, no evidence has linked Russia to these specific drone flights.

Relations with the United States

Regarding the United States, Lavrov offered a nuanced view. He mentioned that the current US administration seems willing to find real solutions to the conflict in Ukraine. He also suggested a desire for practical cooperation, moving past purely ideological differences. This sentiment contrasts with recent comments from former US President Donald Trump. Days earlier, Trump shifted his stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He stated Ukraine could reclaim all its lost territory and labeled Russia a “paper tiger.”
