The plot thickened this week in the mysterious passing of singer Zubeen Garg. Investigators took musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami into custody. This comes as the Assam government’s special team, known as the SIT, digs deeper into what happened. Fans are left wondering: who is Shekhar and how does he connect to the popular singer’s death?
The SIT, set up by the government, is actively probing Zubeen Garg’s death. Shekhar Jyoti Goswami’s detention happened on the very same day. That day, the SIT also raided the homes of Shyamkanu Mahanta, who organized the Northeast India Festival, and Siddharth Sharma, Zubeen’s manager. These simultaneous actions raise many eyebrows.
A Fellow Musician
Shekhar Jyoti Goswami is reportedly a drummer. He was with Zubeen Garg in Singapore when the singer tragically died while scuba diving. A report from the New Indian Express states that Shekhar was a long-time bandmate of Zubeen. However, his Instagram profile paints a broader picture. It lists him as a sound engineer, music producer, arranger, musician, and even a computer hardware engineer. For now, officials have not told the public why he was detained.
Calls for More Arrests
Meanwhile, public demands are growing louder for the arrests of Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma. Neither man was home when the SIT arrived for their raids. Reports suggest that a large crowd gathered outside manager Siddharth Sharma’s house. As police tried to take the SIT team inside, people began throwing stones. Protesters insisted on Sharma’s immediate arrest. They hold him responsible for Zubeen’s death. Authorities later detained two individuals for inciting the crowd and causing a disturbance.
The Drowning Incident
Zubeen Garg, 52, died by drowning during a scuba diving trip in Singapore. He had traveled there to attend the Northeast India Festival. His death occurred on September 19. A death certificate from a Singapore hospital confirms drowning as the cause. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hopes for more details from the post-mortem report. The Chief Minister also promised that if the SIT’s findings are not satisfactory, the Assam government will ask for a CBI investigation.
