Every new iPhone 17 and the iPhone Air now feature Apple’s custom N1 wireless network chip. Apple recently shared more details about the N1’s unique benefits in an interview with CNBC.
When Apple unveiled its latest line of iPhones, the N1 wireless network chip was common across all models. This chip is Apple’s own solution for managing Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread, which is used for smart home devices. Essentially, it handles wireless connections just like the C1 and C1X modems manage 5G mobile connections.
This N1 chip is a clear example of what Apple aimed for when it started designing its own Apple Silicon processors.
Thanks to the N1, the iPhone 17 range now supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. Beyond offering the newest wireless standards, the N1 also makes features like Personal Hotspot and AirDrop faster and much more dependable.
Apple states that the N1 does more than just improve network speed. Tim Millet, VP of Platform Architecture, explained the N1 was designed right alongside the A19 Pro main chip. This lets the N1 handle wireless duties while the main processor can power down. As a result, your iPhone can pinpoint your location with great accuracy, all while using much less battery power.
Arun Mathias, VP of Wireless Software Technologies and Ecosystems, added that Wi-Fi access points help locate your device without needing GPS. This saves even more battery power. This smart efficiency was crucial for the iPhone Air. It also gave a noticeable boost to the battery life of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models.
