Tarachand Barjatya: Rajshri Founder, Family Film Pioneer, Launched Bollywood Stars

When we think of wholesome family entertainment, Rajshri Productions often comes to mind. This studio is still famous for making movies that entire families can enjoy together. Suraj Barjatya, the current head, carries on this tradition. But today, we remember the man who started it all: his grandfather, Tarachand Barjatya. September 21 marks the anniversary of his passing in 1992. Let’s take a look at the fascinating journey of this film pioneer.

Rajshri Productions became a household name from the 1960s to the 1980s. Their films beautifully showcased Indian traditions and family ties. These movies were also very popular at the box office. But this success wasn’t handed to Tarachand Barjatya on a silver platter. His story is one of hard work and pure vision. He created a film empire that gave new faces a chance to shine, making them big stars in Hindi cinema.

A Dream Born in the Theater

Tarachand Barjatya was born into a Marwari family in Rajasthan in 1914. He completed his studies in Calcutta. In 1933, he took his first steps into the film world, joining Motimahal Theater. He worked there without pay, soaking up every bit of knowledge. Later, the very owner of this theater helped him financially to start Rajshri Productions. This support led to the birth of Rajshri Pictures Private Limited in 1947.

Films with Heart, Not Just High Budgets

Tarachand Barjatya used his new production house to make wonderful films on a tight budget. These movies told stories about Indian families, relationships, and love. He had a knack for finding fresh faces. He gave opportunities to new actors and singers. Almost every film made under Rajshri Productions during his time was a hit. The list includes classics like ‘Dosti,’ ‘Jeevan Mrityu,’ ‘Uphaar,’ ‘Piya Ka Ghar,’ ‘Saudagar,’ ‘Geet Gata Chal,’ ‘Tapasya,’ ‘Chitchor,’ ‘Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaye,’ ‘Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se,’ ‘Sawan Ko Aane Do,’ ‘Tarana,’ ‘Nadiya Ke Paar,’ and ‘Saraansh.’
